Leech Racing has a clear philosophy which underpins everything we do and has a proven track record in delivering results. We believe strongly in an individual approach, developing tailored training programmes for the specific needs of each horse. Leech Racing has been highly successful in improving horses where a larger yard has been simply unable to give them the time and focus required to unleash their potential.

Highly ambitious, we have a constant desire to improve and to provide the best possible results for our expanding list of owners. Our outlook is professional, flexible and approachable.

Sophie took out her full license in 2007, with her husband Christian as Assistant. Christian’s background as a BHA handicapper is an enormous asset and gives us the competitive edge in the placing of horses through understanding the handicapping system. This is vital in converting entries to winners.

Initially based in Oxfordshire we achieved early success with 10 winners from under 100 runners. Based in South Devon last season, we had our best ever season, growing our win / placings ratio and winning a prize fund in excess of £100k.

In October 2011 we relocated to Tudor Racing Stables in Gloucestershire, a fabulous, central location from which to build on our success.

We hope this website will provide you with an introduction to who we are, what we do and how we can work with you to realise your ambitions as an owner.

Sophie Leech – Trainer

Horses have always been central to Sophie’s life. In the saddle from a toddler, and surrounding herself with all things equine as a child, it was a natural progression to complete a BSc (hons) Equine Science degree in 2001. A career within the horse racing industry followed with Sophie joining the commercial department at Warwick racecourse. It was there that she met her future husband Christian and a real ‘dream team’ was formed.

Sophie began training horses on the Point to Point circuit and, realising she had a natural flair, decided to commence training professionally under rules. She operated a successful satellite yard for Milton Harris for two years before taking out a license in her own name in 2007.

Christian Leech – Assistant

With a career in the racing industry which spans both hemisphere’s, Christian brings a wealth of experience which is an enormous asset to Leech Racing. Starting his career at Moonee Valley racecourse in Australia, Christian repatriated in 1997 at Cheltenham racecourse, within the commercial division. In 1999 he was appointed Racecourse Manager at Warwick, a position he held alongside fulfilling ambitions within the saddle; Christian rode on the flat as an amateur in 2002. In 2004 he was appointed Sprint Handicapper for the British Horseracing Authority before deciding to make his career full time within the training discipline.
